Orman Dam

Orman Dam, also known as Belle Fourche Reservoir, is located 8 miles east of Belle Fourche. It was initially date as a reservoir for agricultural use but was later designated as a national landmark where you can find camping, fishing, and other recreational activities.
The Area
Orman Dam is one of the local’s favorite areas for various water activities. For years it was the go to spot for fishing and recreational water activities. The lake is filled with various fish including Walleye, Yellow Perch, Channel Catfish, Black Crappie, Smallmouth Bass, White Bass, and Tigermuskie.
More recently it has received funding to also include camping areas with bathrooms, drinking water, picnic shelters, and showers. A bait shop was also opened at the main entrance of the recreational area to save travelers a trip into town for needed supplies. Fishermen also benefited from this funding to receive a second boat ramp, asphalted roads, and a cleaning station.
Events
Orman Dam is home to a number of summer invents including the Kids Fishing Day where kids learn everything needed to catch and clean their fish, Follow that Footprint where you can learn about the different animals of the area and their tracks, and Nature Explorers where you join other naturalists exploring nature.

History
Orman Dam was initially creating 1911 as an agricultural reservoir. It is over 8,000 acres with 58 miles of shoreline. It was the largest earthen dam of its time and was designated a National Historic Engineering Landmark.
